Chapter Eleven

Nat was in her van, a place she was spending more time as of late.

There was a difference between danger you knew about and danger you felt, deep in your bones.

It was like hearing that guns were deadly versus having a gun pointed at your head. One was an intellectual exercise, a matter of calm and collected debate. The other made your heart pound against your ribs and robbed you of every reasoning ability.

Nat had always known her mission and her ideas were dangerous. She wasn’t a fool, and she accepted the risks. She had prepared, loading her computers with top-of-the-line hacking software, familiarizing herself with AI code, and practicing breaking into secure systems. Preparation was her key to victory.

What had she been thinking?

Her hands hovered over the keyboard, sweat dripping from her armpits and down her arms to her fingers. She wanted to type. She needed to type. But her fingers wouldn’t respond, refusing to do anything except twitch sporadically. Her heart was racing, and she swore she could feel her pulse in her fingertips. She glanced at the driver’s seat of the van. She could be out of this city in less than a half hour. Everything could be forgotten. Within a few days she could have a new identity, again. Maybe she could earn an honest living.

She couldn’t bring herself to do it. Memories of Jack floated to the surface, his toothless grin, his laugh haunting her. If she started a new life, everything would be for nothing. She couldn’t be that selfish. This was for him. It always had been. Even if it cost her everything.

Br00-S was her best lead. She had never doubted that from the moment she met him. Every action he took only confirmed her belief.

But she had never anticipated how deep the rabbit hole would go.

She was fucked.

That was all she could think.

Fucked.

Fucked.

Fucked.

In theory, this should have been easy. Get the evidence she needed and go public. It never should have gone this far.

Her mind explored different possibilities, but she always came back to the truth. She was in far over her head, playing a game whose rules she didn’t even know. Once, she had thought she was badass for hacking into the national identity registry.

That seemed like child’s play now.

After Br00-S’ attempted break-in at Proskey Enterprises, Nat made sure she’d never be left in the dark again. She had pinned a small camera to Br00-S’ hoodie. It was too small to have a wireless transmitter, and she’d worried he would notice a signal, so she needed to wait until he returned to get the data off it.

On her monitor was the footage from Br00-S’ confrontation with the detective, Bryce Lewis. The screen was frozen, the detective’s calm, brown eyes studying Br00-S as though he could somehow see into the soul of the robot. At the time of the still, he hadn’t been afraid. But she had watched the video until the end, and she saw the flash of fear in his eyes near the end.
